Visual Stress, or Merles-Irlen Syndrome as it is more commonly known, is a condition that causes light sensitivity, headaches and reading fatigue or reading stress. This appears as patterns which cause visual disturbances and result in print distortion, visual stress and fatigue when reading. Symptoms can occur despite having normal vision.
the following is a list of symptoms commonly known:
In the population as a whole around 5% are badly effected and 20% to a lesser degree. People with Visual Stress often display trademark symptoms when reading. They commonly use their finger as a marker, are restless, moving closer to or away from the page, skipping lines when reading and excessively rubbing their eyes.
The strange thing is, that adults or children suffering from Visual Stress, are normally unaware that they have it, as symptoms appear completely normal to them. Only when they are tested and the right colour is put to them, do they realise that reading can be so much more of a pleasure. One of the biggest problems of Visual Stress in children is the low self-esteem the condition can generate. Reading difficulties often lead to a host of other problems e.g., poor writing skills and low confidence levels. Once we are able to correct these issues with the specific colours, not only does their reading and writing skills develop more naturally, their confidence and self esteem improves.
In 1992 Professor Arnold Wilkins (Head of Visual Perception Unit – University of Essex) became aware of a recent report of the use of colour for reading difficulties, he had previously researched Epilepsy and noted that some of the symptoms described by children with specific reading difficulties were similar to some of those of Photosensitive Epilepsy (provoked by a visual trigger).
Recognising that further research was needed and backed by the Medical Research Council in the UK. Prof Wilkins proceeded to gather evidence, and invented the Intuitive Colorimeter and used the instrument to carry out scientific research to validate his claim of a precision optimal colour that could be selected.
Published in 1994 Professor Wilkins was able to demonstrate the beneficial effect of colour on visual distortion. Since this report was first published many experts in the fields of Psychology, Optometry and Education, have supported the results. The College of Optometrists have since issued strict procedural guidelines.
With some children and adults reading at the best of times can be extremely stressfull, after only a few minutes in some cases. Visual Stress can build up, resulting in a variety of conditions, which can include headaches, swimming patterns on pages, coloured blobs, etc. When a person has Visual Stress or Visual Perception Disorder, a page of print can assume a very stripey image, similar to looking at a stripey shirt or pattern. After a while the image becomes uncomfortable to look at.
It is considered that a person with Visual Stress due to the neurones in the Visual Cortex may suffer reading problems. The Visual Cortex contains cells that in some cases work too fast and do not correlate information properly and are a cause of the Visual Stress. By adding colour to these cells it slows them down and allows them to process information more accurately, thus relieving the symptoms.

As our bodies change during our lifetime, so do our eyes. They may develop problems with near or distance focusing, called `Refractive Error’ The four common types of Refractive Errors are:
1) Nearsightedness (Myopia): when vision is more blurry at a distance rather than near
2) Farsightedness (Hyperopia): when vision is more blurry when near than at a distance
3) Astigmatism: focusing of light inside the eye is unequal which may cause blurriness both near and at a distance
4) Presbyopia: inability of the eyes to focus due to ageing changes which happen to most people over the age of forty.
It is quite common for individual to have more than one condition at the same time
While corrective lenses should compensate for the natural refractive errror of the eye, they might temporarily alter a person’s perceptive vision slightly, making the visual scene look like it’s slanting up or down or to one side or by making an object seem larger or smaller than it really is. Most people should be able to adapt to the new lenses within several days at the most. Adjusting to bifocals or varifocals( which are presribed to people who have trouble focusing on near items) can take a little longer. Along with possibly having to adjust to the some of the above named sensations, a bifocal/varifocal wearing patient must learn head movements and scanning techniques to make proper use of the bifocal segment of the spectacles. Initially, trying to learn how to use bifocals may even cause slight vertigo but most people will adapt to their new bifocal spectacles if they persevere by wearing them full-time. Varifocal wearers should have a slightly easier time adjusting to their new prescription lenses, because of the absence of the near segment. If after a week or two you are still finding it hard to adjust to your new spectacles, ask your optician to check the lenses to verify they are correct, and if necessary have your prescription itself rechecked. Finally, it is advised not to wear old prescription glasses while trying to get used to new one, as this could make the adjustment time protracted.

According to many well known and respected celebrities, it is now quite the in thing to be seen wearing spectacles, especially as there are so many new and exciting frames available. For instance, fashion writer/broadcaster Caryn Franklin is quoted by The Guardian as saying she tends to buy plastic glasses, with makes such as Gucci, Prada, Ralph Lauren and Alain Mikli among her collection. ’Glasses are like facial confectionary – a delicious thing to put on. They give you edge’… Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana is also quoted as saying ’ Glasses add elegance’. and a celebrity very recently in the news for his amazing artwork, David Hockney, has made glasses ‘ a signature look throughout his career’ Of course, spectacles were very much appreciated by the public on the faces of artists such as Buddy Holly in the 50′s and John Lennon in the 60/70′s but our love affair with glasses has continued to the present day thanks to the more extrovert/imaginative designs sported nowadays by celebrities such as Bill Gates, Johnny Depp and Sarah Palin, as well as our very own Dennis Taylor and Sir Elton John. Last year Kara Tointon, 2010 Strictly Come Dancing champion, who attended the Spectacle Wearer of The Year Awards 2011 is quoted as saying ‘I love wearing my glasses. Its amazing how a pair of glasses can transform you to fabulous in a flash’!
